New Zoned Energy Rating Labels for Daikin Split System Air Conditioners
The new Zoned Energy Rating Label (ZERL) will make choosing the most efficient split system air conditioner for your home easy. The new rating system divides the continent into three distinct climate zones (hot, average, and cold), which allows you to easily identify and compare air conditioners within the climatic zone you live in. The more stars, the more efficient the split system air conditioner is.
The new Zoned Energy Rating Label (ZERL) will replace the old Energy Rating Label (ERL).
What is the difference between the old Energy Rating Label (ERL) and New Zoned Energy Rating Label (ZERL)?
OLD – Star ratings on the old Energy Rating Label (ERL) are calculated based on a single indoor and outdoor temperature condition and does not take into account the different climate conditions across Australia.
Performance Calculation Details:
- Star ratings for heating (or cooling) are based on the efficiency of the air conditioner at one outside temperature of 7°C (35°C for cooling).
- The calculation takes into account standby power and assumes standby time of 6760 hours a year.
- The calculation assumes that the air conditioner is heating (or cooling) for 2000 hours a year, and does not take into account the climate in which the air conditioner may be operating.
NEW – Star ratings on the new Zoned Energy Rating Label (ZERL) are calculated based on local climate data and temperature profile throughout the year. The result is seasonal efficiency star ratings for 3 distinct climate zones (hot, average, or cold) allowing you to easily identify and compare air conditioners within the climatic zone you live in. Additional information such as energy usage and noise levels is provided for a more informed purchasing decision.
Performance Calculation Details:
- The calculation takes into account standby power and time at standby is dependent on zone.
- Uses climate data (dependent on zone) to estimate the number of hours the air conditioner will be on for heating (or cooling) across a range of climate temperatures.
- Shows annual energy use based on certain conditions.

How to read the new Zoned Energy Rating Label
- BRAND & MODEL
This is the brand and model number of the air conditioner. Use this to ensure you are looking at the right information for your desired model. - COOLING CAPACITY
This is the available cooling capacity (kW) of the air conditioner when at an indoor temperature of 27°C & outdoor temperature of 35°C (T1)*. - HEATING CAPACITY
This is the available heating capacity (kW) of the air conditioner when at an indoor temperature of 20°C & outdoor temperature of 7°C (H1) or 2°C (H2)*.
- SOUND LEVELS
The values indicate the sound power level^ of the indoor unit & the outdoor unit. Lower numbers reflect quieter operation. - STAR RATINGS
The stars show you how efficient the air conditioner will perform in each of the three climate zones. The more stars, the more efficient. - ENERGY USAGE
This tells you the energy usage of the air conditioner per year for cooling & heating. The lower the kWh used, the lower the running cost (multiply by your electricity tariff for estimated running cost).

How to use the Zoned Energy Rating Label to Calculate Running Costs?
Step 1. Determine what size air conditioner you need for your room. To do this, you can download the Daikin ExplorAir App from the App Store or Google Play. The Daikin ExplorAir app allows users to measure their room using augmented reality. The video below demonstrates how to use ExplorAir to find the right split system for your room.
Step 2. Refer to the map of Australia on the Zoned Energy Rating Label to find out what zone you are in.
Step 3. Compare star ratings on air conditioner performance in your zone and make a selection based energy efficient star rating and energy use.
Step 4. Visit https://www.energyrating.gov.au/calculator to calculate annual running costs for your selected air conditioner.
